Week Three:
Strategies to dig deeper into our Narrative Writing

Above are a few strategies you can use to show your students how to add on to their narrative. First I would brainstorm a list with your students. Once you have brainstormed, create an anchor chart with them. It is beneficial for them to associate the strategy with a symbol like above. That way when they are editing their writing, they can draw a symbol showing what they want to add. After showing them these different strategies, show an example of how you use one. Below is the model I would use. I found a place where I needed to add more and so I would model how to write that with my students.

Make sure to have your students think about some reflection questions like the ones in the picture. It is important when editing a piece to know where you are going with it.
Teacher Tips:
Here are some different strategies and tools from the Mentor Text: Teaching Writing Through Children's Literature, K-6 to help your students with writing the beginning, middle, and end of their narrative. Work with your students on each of these and provide examples and model how they would look. Examples are provided below from the book I Talk Like a River.
